Course description

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification. It is an ‘in service’ qualification suitable for those delivering education and training in any post-16 learning environment in England.

All candidates must have access to 30 hours of teaching that must be completed and documented during the course and observation of this teaching is mandatory. These can be in a paid role or on a voluntary basis to gain experience but you must be teaching in the hours and have responsibility for the preparation, teaching and assessment of students.

The course includes the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners.

Applicants should be qualified and experienced in the subject they intend to teach. There is an expectation that you would hold at least a level 3 qualification in the subject you wish to teach.

You must have access to 30 teaching practice hours in the duration of the course and be able to be observed by both a mentor and your tutor.

To teach in the post-16 sector, you will usually be expected to have level 2 qualifications in maths and English, and have good digital skills.

If you do not have your level 2 qualfications (Level 2 Functional Skills, GCSE grades C/4 and above) you can study for them here at Northern College in a flexible way for free.

We also have the new Essential Digital Skills Qualifications too – these are also free.

Teaching hours can be paid or voluntary.

Most students cover this cost by applying for an Advanced Learner Loan.

Did you know eligible students don’t need to pay their loan back if they complete their university degree afterwards or until they earn a certain amount? Further information and details on how to apply/eligibility can be found at:
