Course description
This course takes place entirely outdoors. Learners must have reasonable physical fitness, be physically able to move over and around a range of uneven natural ground, and should be comfortable walking on soft, muddy, or sloped terrain. Participants will need to wear strong, sturdy footwear (such as walking boots) and clothing suitable for working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Roots to Rise is ideal for anyone looking to build wellbeing, confidence, and connection through nature‑based learning in a fun, supportive and friendly setting.
Course content
Through practical activities, gentle exploration of natural spaces, and guided reflection, learners will discover how time in nature can support resilience, balance, and personal growth. This course is fully experiential, encouraging learners to be curious, creative, and reflective as they engage with the natural environment.
What can this course lead to?
If you’ve been out of work because of stress, caring responsibilities, low confidence, poor mental wellbeing or a long break from employment, our Roots to Rise can help you take a positive first step forward. In a calm and supportive environment, you’ll have the chance to rebuild confidence, motivation and a sense of purpose at your own pace.

It can also help you feel more confident about taking your next steps — whether that’s volunteering, joining another course, accessing employability support or moving closer to work.
If returning to education or meeting new people feels overwhelming, this course offers a gentle and welcoming way to reconnect with learning and build confidence in social situations. Spending time outdoors and reflecting on your strengths and goals can help reduce anxiety, improve wellbeing and help you feel more ready for future opportunities.
Roots to Rise supports South and West Yorkshire’s focus on improving wellbeing, reducing barriers to employment and helping more people move towards positive futures.
