How Northern College took me from student to Governor

November 26, 2021

Northern College for Adults Governor Angus Morrison credits Northern College with giving him a crucial second chance in life.

Angus worked in the license trade running pubs for many years and returned to education in 2016.

Having experienced some mental health issues and a degree of alcohol dependency, he joined the college to do, at first, a series of short courses.

These included Maths, Mentoring and Counselling which led onto a Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma in Social Studies. It was with this last course in particular that Angus felt that things really clicked and he gained a fascination for the topic.

Angus first heard of Northern College when he had attended some group counselling sessions at Carlton House in Rotherham.  They had contacts at the college and Angus and other group members attended an Open Day.  Angus explains that the information he received on that day and the enthusiasm of the staff for the college and its courses very much appealed to him and he began his learning journey.

Angus continued to progress at the college until 2019 when he successfully progressed onto a three-year degree course in Behavioural Science at the University of Huddersfield.

On this course, Angus acted as a mentor to some of his fellow students. He credits this achievement with the experience he received at Northern College, where he had also completed a mentoring course.

Angus credits much of his success to his experience at Northern College.  He said:

“Northern College was the most fantastic place to study. Its staff supported us so well and the fact that I was a more mature student, in my fifties, was not a problem at all. Vitally important were the other students too. We supported each other and became like a little family”.

“At my time at the college, I was the student Union President for two years and was so impressed at how the college always put the needs of the students first.”

In addition, Northern College is very pleased that Angus accepted an invitation to become a Governor of the college, a moment which Angus describes as the proudest of his life.

On completing his degree Angus hopes to work with under privileged people, especially older people, and encourage them into education.  We wish him every success.
