In November we proudly announced that Northern College student Adrian Swallow had been nominated for the Association of College’s (AoC) Adult Student of the Year. Sadly, Adrian didn’t win the title but he did receive a worthy runner up award and this week Adrian was invited to Parliament to collect it.
Adrian served in the British Army and was deployed for active duty in the Falklands War and as a result of his experiences in what was a brutal warzone, Adrian has suffered from PTSD, depression and anxiety for the rest of his adult life. Adrian wanted to take back control of his life and sought counselling which gave him the confidence to enrol on a number of short residential courses at Northern College in Barnsley.
Adrian had to overcome many barriers whilst studying but with determination and drive to succeed he progressed on to the Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma and then the Level 3 Access to HE Diploma programme at Northern College. With this qualification he was able to enrol at university in September and is currently studying for a degree in Applied Social Sciences.
Everyone at Northern College is extremely proud of Adrian’s achievements and we wish him continued success with his university course.
