English and Maths
Qualifications in English and Maths are essential for adults’ progression in learning and the work place. For adults who missed out at school, getting GCSE or Functional qualifications represents a key personal educational milestone and Northern College in Barnsley is here to help.
We understand that balancing your study commitments alongside the extra challenges to health, work and caring responsibilities isn’t easy and that’s why we support you, every step of the way.
This year, the college’s achievement rate at for GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above stands at 84.6% which is 22% above the national average, and our pass rate is an impressive 100%.
Pre-Access to Higher Education courses
Looking to change or develop a new career? Northern College also offers two Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma courses, which are aimed at adults who aspire to go to university in the future, but need to brush up their study skills first.
The Pre-Access Diploma courses are part-time, so they fit around other commitments that adults have in their everyday lives and they’ll teach you how to research and write academic essays, which are essential skills needed for level 3 study and beyond.
We still have places for two courses starting in November:
Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma in Health Professions – this course will introduce you to a wide range of subjects at level 2 including Health Studies, Safeguarding, Biology and Psychology. If you aspire to work in a health related field such as Nursing, Midwifery, Operating Department Practitioner, Radiographer, Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapy, then learn more here.
Level 2 Pre-Access Diploma in Social Studies – this course will introduce you to a wide range of subjects at level 2 including Psychology, Social Policy, Criminology, Literature and History. If you aspire to work in social care related field such as Counselling, Care Work, Psychology or Social Worker, then learn more here.

Access to Higher Education Programmes
For anyone looking for higher qualifications, Northern College is still taking applications for this year’s Access to Higher Education Diploma courses in Computing, Health Science Professions and Humanities & Social Science. These courses will give you a level 3 qualification that can fast track you to university in just one year.
Did you know, that adult students do not have to repay their Advanced Learner Loan to fund our Access to University programme, if they complete a university degree afterwards?
