Northern College students raise money and create blankets to support the homeless

Students at Northern College have been raising money for several charities already this year, and creating blankets to support the homeless.

They also have a crocheted blanket in Student Services which is being raffled off in aid of Barnsley & Rotherham Mind. It is a beautiful blanket and tickets are just £1 per strip.

Northern College is an adult only residential college housed in the magnificent Wentworth Castle in Barnsley and specialises in bringing people back to education, building confidence and life skills necessary to get the best from a programme of learning.  Once people make the decision to come to college they are captured by the beautiful surroundings, fantastic campus and committed team and often find that introductory short courses leads them on to progression on further and higher education courses.

Activities to date include:

• Macmillan – cake sale
• Royal British Legion – Making and selling poppies
• Save the Children – Christmas Jumper Day
• Barnsley & Rotherham Mind – Christmas Wreath making Workshops

Over the Autumn and Winter period, students crocheted and knitted five blankets which have been donated to charities that support the homeless. Two of the blankets went to Barnsley Starter Packs, one to Humankind and the other is being raffled in aid of Mind.

The final blanket is currently having the finishing touches put on and will then also be going to Barnsley Starter Packs. Barnsley Starter Packs support homeless people when they get their very first property by giving them a bundle of basics to help them get on their feet. Recipients of the bundles are all referred by agencies across the Barnsley Borough.
