Mike was born in Sheffield and started his graduate career working at British Steel in Rotherham, before returning to academia to study for his PhD. He taught for many years in metallurgy and materials science at Sheffield Hallam University. His interests include student retention, learner autonomy, enquiry based learning, the use of media and technology in teaching and learning, and the personal and professional development of engineers; he has published widely in all these areas.
Prior to his retirement in 2017 Mike was Professor of Engineering Education and Assistant Dean for Academic Development for the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering & Sciences at Sheffield Hallam University. Mike is an Emeritus Professor at Sheffield Hallam University; Director of Mike Bramhall (HE Consultants) Ltd, a Quality Assurance Agency Reviewer, a consultant for Advance HE, an external examiner for the Open University and the University of Warwick; a standing validation panel external member for Edge Hill University and a consultant to the School of Computing & Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.
In his spare time he is the Chair of the Board of Trustees for ‘Amy’s Retreat’, a small Sheffield based charity that supports families of children with cancer. The charity supports the children and their families by sending them on short respite holidays between treatments and during recovery.
