What are the entry requirements?

No formal qualifications are required to study this course. A willingness to learn is essential.

How much does this cost?

FREE*

* This course is fully funded for eligible students.

If you are not eligible, the cost of the course is £25.00. If you choose to stay residentially, and you are not eligible via the residential funding assessment, there will be an additional fee to pay. The vast majority of students are eligible to study and stay residentially for free and we will confirm when you apply.

Course description

This is an initial course to introduce and explore the subject of Counselling. This includes the role of the helping skills and active listening and some of the skills and knowledge that are essential to developing counselling and helping skills.

What can this course lead to?

This course will introduce you to the subject of counselling and will support you to progress on to further short courses including Counselling Skills for Volunteers and gain qualifications such as the Level 2 Award in Counselling Skills. Our Student Support Services team will work with you to design a personalised learning journey based on your needs and aspirations.

Studying the counselling course at the Northern College has been one of the most profoundly transformative and insightful experiences of my life. It has forever changed me as a person and I view the world through new eyes now.

Two years ago, I first went to Northern College for the first time to do a self confidence course. Approximately eight courses later including counselling and several people skills courses, I am now working in a homeless hostel supporting the vulnerable and encouraging them to attend courses at Northern College.

Staff were wonderful and the rooms where lovely.
